Individuals Stopping Weight-Loss Injections Put On Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than People Using Diet and Exercise
New research reveals that patients who come off popular GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass much more quickly than those who stop conventional lifestyle programs.
Findings released in a leading health publication points out that while overweight individuals often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"People purchasing these treatments should be informed of the risk of quick weight regain when the therapy ends," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain suggests a reversion to pre-treatment weight in about 18 months.
Comparing Approaches
The study, which examined 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the effects of these new drugs with conventional dieting.
Scientists note that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise usually experience a slower creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Explaining the Rapid Regain
Doctors believe the way of the injections accounts for the heightened weight return.
These medications mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also lessen responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating much more probable."
A Chronic Disease?
Health authorities advise the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
Professionals contend that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy might need to be ongoing.
This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "emphasize the persistent character of obesity," akin to managing diseases like diabetes.
Patient Experiences
People who have come off the medication report a intense resurgence of cravings.
"I experienced a switch that goes on and I was suddenly starving," described an individual.
This difficulty is compounded if users have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Widespread Use
Figures suggest that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with demand being substantial.
- Adoption is more common among females compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
- Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, clinicians emphasize that while the jabs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and maintained weight loss relies on integrated behavioural support.
